History
Little is known of the history and development of this area in the immediate post-Roman and early Saxon period. The manor of Begeurda was held by Leofric prior to 1066. During the Norman reorganisation of the land holdings following the Conquest (recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086), and the death of Harold at Hastings, the village and its land were held by William de Poilley. It is thought that the original settlement grew up around the parish church of St Alban.
