Commemorative Monument
19th Century Monument erected to commemorate the great Torbay shipwreck of 11 January 1866. The monument is of dressed limestone with white marble detailing and was carved by Wood of Bristol according to an inscription it carries. The monument is formed of a square pedestal with a moulded base which carries a block carved on south side with a shipwreck scene. Above this is a cross standing on a pile of rocks which has an anchor leaning against it. On the west face of the pedestal is the inscription detailing the disaster. On the south side of the plinth is another inscription recording that the monument was paid for by the Brixham Shipwrecked Sailors Relief Committee with money raised by public subscription. Enclosing the monument is an iron fence hanging from low square stone posts aligned with the 4 corners.
