C15; tower rebuilt 1620; whole heavily restored 1885; C20 seating / furnishing. The church is built of horizontal blocks of laminated stone with occasional larger blocks of limestone; shale and red maulalso appear, and the chancel quoins and east window are of dark yellow, possibly Ham Hill stone; roof coverings are of slate, with a lead roof to the tower. The tower is square and squat, of two principal stages with a short third stage capped by a battlemented parapet.
Building is open for worship
Ground plan:
West tower, aisleless nave with south porch, chancel.
Footprint of Church buildings: 112 m²
The tower is ancient, rebuilt or repaired in the 17th century (an inset stone about 15 ft. from the ground is incised FW 1620), but the remainder was rebuilt in either 1875 or 1891, according to different sources.
The stages of the tower are marked externally by string courses. The lowest stage has small rectangular openings on the north, south and west faces formed of two large uprights and a heavy lintel; the bell-openings in the middle stage are also quite small. Perpendicular in character, with trefoiled tops under square heads. At the north-east corner of the tower is a slightly projecting stair-turret and the nave is only a little wider than the tower. The nave windows are of two lights, except for the three light window on the south side east of the porch; the chancel east window has three stepped lancets with trefoiled heads.
Stained Glass
The east window glass is a memorial to R.D. Blackmore, author of Lorna Doone.
Like the exterior, the interior of the church is uncompromisinglyplain and its interest lies in the small number of good fittings and the pleasing ceilings (a shallow curved plaster vault, divided by oak ribs into compartments, in the nave and a wooden-boarded ceiling in the chancel).
