The church was built on the site of a Norman church: as seen today, its construction was spread over the 13th and 14th Centuries, and more significantly through the 15th Century. It stands on a prominent knoll within an arboretum of yews and marks its place with its fine tower which surveys the 17C alm-houses, the High Street and the open countryside beyond.

The church was built on the site of a Norman church: as seen today, its construction was spread over the 13th and 14th Centuries, and more significantly through the 15th Century. Much of the nave was completed by 1500 in the Perpendicular style. The stained glass above the chancel arch was inserted in 1878.
The Perpendicular style dominates, with wide windows, strong mullions and immense clerestory windows along the top end of the nave and, unusually, across the chancel arch. The roofs are lead covered.
