The Church is located in a prominent position close to the Square in the heart of the community and is a visible landmark for many miles around. The church is Grade 1 listed and stands within a grassed churchyard, which was closed to burials in 1854. There is some evidence of a church – possibly a wooden construction - being built in this location as early as the 8th century. Construction of the present church was in progress by the 12th century, and evidence of Norman architecture remains to this day, particularly the 2 pillars at the west end of the Nave.

Construction of the present church was in progress by the 12th century, and evidence of Norman architecture remains to this day, particularly the 2 pillars at the west end of the Nave. The walls and pillars of the north transept and north aisle and either side of the nave are 13th century, Early English. The cruciform plan of the church was set in that century. The Chancel and walls either side of the South Porch are from the Decorated period (14th century), the Tower is 15th century Perpendicular with 112 steps leading to the tower battlements with their fine views. Following the event of the Civil War the church was declared ruinous in 1657. Initial restoration was in the 1680s and subsequently in the second half of the 19th century.

The church has a range of interesting features, including 12 fine stained-glass windows by Wailes and Strang of Newcastle, dating from 1882 onwards, shortly after the death of William Wailes. Two of these have been hidden by the 1970 organ rebuild (see below). The two Pre-Raphaelite windows in the N clerestory were designed by Sidney Meteyard and made in 1921 by the stained-glass department of H.H. Martyn &Co. The church has memorials to Francis Keyt and John Chamberlayne who died in 1646 during the Battle of Stow and a number of other individual wall memorials. There is a 14th Century piscina in the Chancel.
