The church was first built around the year 1170. Originally a small rectangle occupying the area of the present nave, it was soon enlarged by the addition of side aisle and a tower at the West end. About 1340 a new chancel was built, and the aisles widened. In the 1860s a clergy vestry and new south porch were built, transepts extended, and organ chamber added. A choir vestry was added in 1911.
Nave is of 2 principal bays, with tower to the west, and crossing and chancel arch to the east. Pews date to the 1860s, though they were later raised onto timber platforms. Nave is roofed by medieval trussed rafters, tied by heavy transverse beams that were replaced in 1976.
