The church of St Nicholas stands on a sandstone promontory which rises above the level of the main street in Compton. The church is set in an oval churchyard with stone walls surrounding it. The western tower is probably pre-Conquest but most of the building dates from the 12th century. Abutting the tower is a rectangular nave - with north and south aisles - reducing in width at the chancel arch to a rectangular chancel.

Of oustanding importance is the Sanctuary which has an upper Sanctuary dating from the 1160s. The North and South Aisles of the nave date from circa 1170/1180.
The building has later medieval alterations including a 13th century spire and windows: in the 15th century the southern roof slope was raised. There are 17th century furnishings - the altar rail, the pulpit with tester and the rood screen. A succession of Rectors made a few changes in the 19th century adding a vestry and a porch.
Abutting the tower is a rectangular nave - with north and south aisles - reducing in width at the chancel arch to a rectangular chancel. Roofs are covered in plain tiles and the spire in shingles. The walls are primarily constructed of rubblework and rendered externally, except for the South Porch (1845) which is bargate stone with Bath stone dressings. External dressings on the medieval sections of the building are primarily in chalk.
