Archaeology
Red sandstone foundations of medieval church found during construction of church hall 1954. South-west crypt opened and recorded in 1974. More than one style and one colour of sandstone represented in surviving medieval springers. Footing of north wall of tower exposed in excavations 2001. Parish rooms 1954-57, extended 2002-03.
Excavation of graveyard to north and west of church 2001 recorded 857 burials, mainly of the late 18th and 19th cents. The majority were in wooden coffins in earth-cut graves. 35 brick-lined graves and vaults were recorded. There was much disarticulated bone, some of which had been placed in charnel pits.
13th century church had nave, north and south aisles, tower and spire, crypt beneath nave and vaulted crypt at west end of south aisle. Lower part of tower original. Medieval crypt at west end of south aisle originally covered by a low groined vault, entered by plain pointed doorway. Crypt under chancel- no vault, floor and lower parts of walls cut into bedrock. 17th century church had chancel with crypt under, nave and north and south aisles. Medieval ribbed vault of south-west crypt replaced in brick, probably 18th century- remaining medieval features were corner springers and several courses of sandstone masonry. Whole building with exception of spire was encased in brick in 1690. Whole of church, except for tower, rebuilt in 14th century style in 1873-75. Walls of church at time of restoration were on the old foundations- plan of medieval church was nave, chancel, north and south aisles and tower at north-west corner.
