It was built in 1838, enlarged in 1856 and transformed in 1884 by J A Chatwin, a pupil of Charles Barry. It is a Grade II listed building in the heart of the Edgbaston Conservation Area.

The stained glass windows of St George’s provide a very complete record of the work done by the better of the late Victorian studios, such as Burlison and Grylls and Heaton, Butler and Bayne, of London, and the Birmingham firm of John Hardman and Co. There is also a most notable Kempe window in the Lady Chapel.

The chancel floor is beautifully laid in mosaic and Italian marble (the work of Burke and Company of London) with medallions representing the four evangelists, St George and the Dragon, the Agnus Dei and the emblems of the Holy Trinity. The chancel also features carved oak choir stalls and open tracery screen and the original (1890) carved oak organ case.
The pulpit and font are in matching stone and alabaster and there is a splendid Royal coat of arms carved in oak which adorns the west wall of the nave above the font.
