A chapel of ease was built on the site of the existing church in the 1720s. It formed the northern range of a C-shaped building which also accommodated almshouses and a school. The almshouses survive and were extended into the school when it closed in the mid-20th century. The chapel of ease was pulled down in the 1840s and a new church built in its place. In 1872 AE Nesfield designed a new chancel, vestry, transepts and a side chapel which were appended to the 1840s church. In 1877 the 1840s church was pulled down and a nave, side aisle and tower constructed, again to Nesfield's design. The church is built of Grinshill stone, the earlier Nesfield elements being Decorated Gothic and the later, Perpendicular. The key graveyard memorials are to the east of the chancel, the few pre-Nesfield ones are to the north.
