St James, Birkdale, was constructed between 1856 and 1857 to the designs of Architect, A Rimmer. It is listed Grade II. The church building is laid out to a simple plan with chancel, nave, north and south transepts and with a “four stage” tower topped by a spire at the west end. The walls are of coursed “rock faced” red sandstone with slate roofs laid in diminishing courses which have occasional timber dormer windows centred between the braced Queen post roof trusses to introduce additional natural light into the worship space.

St James, Birkdale, was constructed between 1856 and 1857 to the designs of Architect, A Rimmer.
The original building was extended in 1879-80 by the addition of the organ loft and vestries at the east end and at the same time porches were introduced to north and south sides to replace the original entrances midway along the nave.
The North and South transepts were added around ten years later and a new smaller vicar’s vestry to the south east between 1906-09 which also appears to have coincided with alterations at the west end where the tower access staircase, reconfigured in previous phases was removed entirely making access into the interior of the tower impossible without an extension ladder.
