The parish of Immanuel came into existence on 26 March 1938 in order to provide worship space for the increasing numbers of people moving into the area. Plans for the church had been drawn up in 1937, by William Harvey of Harvey & Wicks (architects), in a Modern Byzantine style. It is one of three in the region, including Bournville Village. The foundation stone was laid on 13 May 1939. The first phase of the building, comprising the nave only (with seats for 124), was consecrated on 25 May 1940. The outbreak of WW2 in 1939 meant that further work was delayed. A temporary wooden wall with a small wooden vestry was erected at the East end.
The vicarage was completed in 1963 (usage ceased in 2017). In 1964/65 the sanctuary, chancel, lady chapel (with seats for 32), vestries and choir gallery were added. It has a two-manual pipe organ in good repair. The gardens at the front of the church were completed in August 1987 with the proceeds of an appeal.
The interior of the church is spacious, and the acoustics are excellent. Fixed items of furniture include: the main altar, cross on east wall, organ console, two stone pulpits (one each on north and south sides), font (built into south pulpit). There is a notional bell tower with an electric bell. The choir gallery houses the organ pipes. Movable items include: altar rail, choir stalls, piano, chairs (no pews), font (traditional design), wooden lectern, various prayer desks, wooden Roll of Honour of those who died in WW2, and a list on a wooden board of incumbents of the parish. Registers, communion plate and other items of value are kept in the vestry safe; these are modest yet well-designed. There is a Book of Remembrance in a free-standing wooden case.
