A rectangular red brick church, a prominent landmark, standing high, looking over the River and closing the vista looking up St. James's Street. It has a square embattled tower and round-headed windows, containing later coloured glass.
Inside it has galleries, with well designed panelled fronts, going round the North, West and South sides, supported on iron ' Gothick' columns of quatrefoil section, one of the earliest examples of cast-iron construction in England and forty years earlier than Rickman's similar work in Liverpool. A good 18th century enriched plaster cornice runs round the top of the walls internally from which rises a later, but well-designed, open timber roof whose trusses are supported on carved heads. There are some 18 or 19 good memorial tablets, well arranged round the walls both above and below the galleries, some of them commemorating people of historical importance: and a carved, painted and gilt Royal Arms. The church also contains some wrought- iron staff-rests ornamented with gilt 'Liver Birds'.
Clock
The tower contains a good and unusual four-faced clock, visible from afar and used as a landmark by ships.
