A flight of stairs and a wrought iron screen separate the ante-room from the mausoleum proper, a cold and sombrely magnificent chamber, lit on the north by two plain round-headed windows. The walls were originally decoarated with paintings by the Venetian artist Gaetano Brunnetti, but shortly after the Second World War they were more or less completely repainted by Starmer.
