Built between 1877 and 1879, it was designed by the Manchester architect Herbert Edward Tijou, in 14th Century style. The tower was completed in 1889 to a modified design by J S Crowther and houses a single bell. The bell was cast by I: Rudhall for St Peter’s Church Manchester in 1795.
The interior of St Andrew’s was very plain at first apart from a marble font and pulpit, the church was beautified over several decades. Notably, the capitals of the columns, apostles’ heads and angel corbels were carved, the organ and an 19th Century reredos were installed in the 1880s. The stained glass windows were added between the late 1880s and 1920. The three east windows above the Communion Table depict scenes from the gospels beginning with Jesus' birth, followed by his death and resurrection. They were designed and made in 1886 by Charles Kempe, one of the finest Victorian stained glass makers. The oak pews in the aisles came from Manchester Cathedral in 1893 and the central nave pews were installed in 1918. The Minton herringbone tiled floor and oak panelling, the Last Supper reredos, Communion rail, choir stalls and wrought iron organ loft were all installed in the chancel between 1898 and 1902 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.
