St Swithin’s Church is a Grade ll* Listed building. The present Georgian building was built in 1721 on the site of a medieval Church in classic style following a fire. Further work was carried out in the late 1890’s including the addition of a gabled North Porch entrance, a Vestry to South side and some refenestration.
Building is open for worship
Footprint of Church buildings: 262 m²
History
The former medieval church on the site was burnt down with the reconstruction in 1721 following the original foundations. The simplicity of the plan suggests that the original church was early medieval or Norman. Further work was carried out in the late 1890’s including the addition of a gabled North Porch entrance, a Vestry to South side and some refenestration.
Archaeology
Watching brief in 2014 on drain trench from south east corner and on test pit revealed no significant archaeological remains and no graves, probably because of the trench’s shallow depth.
