By the early 1860’s, the population of the Parish of St James’, of which Moorside was a part, had increased from some 12,000 in 1851 to over 17,000. In response to this need, a school and temporary church was built in 1861 on Northgate Lane by Thomas Mellodew, replacing the old school on Sholver Lane.
