St.Mary the Virgin Church is set amongst one of the largest churchyards in the country stretching over some 3 hectares (9 acres). The original churchyard, which is located on all four sides of A fine Church with much medieval work and of great historic importance as the ancient Parish Church of Prestwich-cum-Oldham. There has been a Church on this site since at least 1200, but the earliest part of the present structure appears to be the 15th Century tower; the nave and aisles date from the 16th Century; More recent additions during the Georgian and Victorian period to cope with the increasing parish population during the industrial revolution.
Building is open for worship
Footprint of Church buildings: 800 m²
To cope with the increase the churchyard has seen several extensions in 1827, 1864, 1925 and 1953 with an area still available for consecration and contain notable listed grade 2 monuments and gravestones dating from 1641 to the beginning of the 20th Century associated with local life, natural science, civil engineering, and physics which still benefits mankind today.
The exterior is finished in a red/pink sandstone, originally quarried from nearby Collihurst which can be seen in use at the Catherdral and St.Anne’s Church. Following the exhaustion of this quarry bed later additions and repairs have used sandstone from other similar seams located in the Midlands and Cumbria.

The interior design is notable for the very tall octagonal piers support fine 16th century coffered roof with carved and guilded bosses. Similar in design and structure to the timber roof structure contained within Manchester Cathedral. Most of the fittings, including the polychromatic marble floor in the chancel and screen with stone wall land integral pulpit, are late 19th century, added during the extension by Austin and Paley of Lancaster.
