The tower is late Saxon (c990) and is the oldest part of the building. The south doorway late C12 and nave, aisles and chancel are C13 though the north aisle was rebuilt in 1857. The south door is late C12. The building was restored by Thomas Austin in the 1850s from a state of serious decay and the roof structures all date from this time. The building is Grade I Listed and its curtilage walls and other features are also thereby protected. Several particular gravestones are also listed (Grade II). A copy of the building listing is appended to this statement. The building has a short nave with aisles, transepts and chancel. The vestry is at the south west corner and has recently (2019) been reordered into an office and toilet. The tower stands over the organ chamber at the west end, the space behind the organ containing storage and a timber tower stair.
Principal materials are dressed sandstone, some of Roman Wall origin, and a Welsh slate roof. The steeply pitched roofs have flat water tablings and foliated cross finials on all gables. The unbuttressed west tower has two-light round-arched bell openings, with baluster mullion and pierced roundel over, in round-headed thin raised frame. There are further small round-headed windows below, two on the south side and one on the west. The tower roof is of concrete with lead coverings and dates from the early C20.
