The Church of St Michael and All Angels traces its origins back to 1016 when Queen Emma, wife of King Aethelred the Unready gave the chapel to the See of Winchester. The first stone church was built around 1135 under King Stephen. Much of the building was constructed with locally quarried iron-gravel and chalk quarried in Hurley. A new chancel was constructed in 1272 under Edward I on the present site of St Katherine’s chapel. The church was occupied from the end of the 14th century by the monks of Hurley who used it as their chapter house. At this time, they built a new chapel that is now the Chancel. The major part of the church was built in the 1400s. The tower and bell tower were completed in the 15th century. Following Henry VIII’s break with Rome, the walls were white-washed and screens and statues removed. In the mid 19th century extensive works were carried out under George Streets design. New stonework was installed, a wooden screen placed across the chapel entrance and the South Porch was built.
